A Perfectly Good TV Sitting at the Bottom of My Closet
I have been toying with the idea of taking the TV out of my bedroom. So after 10+ years with a television, cable, and a DVD player (or VCR back in the day) on my dresser, I took it out last week. It was quite a difficult decision. I have a very hard time falling asleep. My mind races. I go through the lists of things I have to/want to do. I worry. I plan things. Things I forgot to do that day pop into my mind. I can never fall asleep- even if I am dead tired. So I have always turned on the TV at bedtime and been distracted enough from my thoughts that I can fall asleep.
May 10, 2003: I get married. It is the best thing that has ever happened to me BUT... Cuyler can't sleep unless it is pitch black and silent. So for the last 5 years of marriage he has suffered through my nightly "TV time". He has gone through dozens of pairs of earplugs and he even has an eyepatch thingy. (Hope he doesn't mind me spilling the beans on that!) Because he has been such a good sport about it, I decided it is about time for him to have things his way for a while. (5 years? Maybe!!) I will make the sacrifice for my sweetie. Will I be able to fall asleep? Well in the past week I have fallen asleep on the couch twice, watched Grey's Anatomy on my iPod in bed twice, Cuyler read me a book once, and the other couple of nights I have been tired enough to fall asleep on my own. I think that will probably be the pattern for a while. But I am willing to try it.

Well it must be love then! I think that once you get used to the peace and quiet Jess, you will fall right to sleep. I have to say it's got to be a Maynard thing. Uncle Steven always falls asleep with the tv on. Thank God for sleep timers. I'm ok if the tv shuts off before I go to bed. Not so good if it's still on - too tempting to watch!
You are a good woman-if Dad can fall asleep without the TV MOST of the time- than it should work fine for you too. Rumor has it that if you do something for 3 weeks, it becomes a new habit. Every single thing I read about good sleep says you shouldn't have any distractions when you hit the hay. You will have to send the kids out here until your new sleep pattern is solid!!! ma
They are on their way, mom! Thanks for the offer!
Jess...I have trouble sleeping at night too. Can't sleep with TV on..can't sleep in quiet either..Seems only thing that seems to work is finding a talk radio station. My mind does not work too much but seems to kick in at bed time and them tossing and turning begins. Have your Mom call me when the kids arrive...
Jess! The sound on my TV just went out so I'm tv'less too. Good luck. :)
